Asian Longhorn Beetles and Emerald Ash Borer Talk

Joan Allen

Sunday, January 23

2 - 3 p.m. • Simsbury Public Library Program Room

Find out more about the Asian Longhorned Beetle and the Emerald Ash Borer, two non-native beetles that have the potential to cause devastating losses to Connecticut trees if they find their way into the state and go undetected. The Asian Longhorned Beetle has been responsible for serious losses of maples and other hardwoods in nearby states including Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey. In 2010, the Emerald Ash Borer was identified in several New York counties. Keeping an eye out for these pests or evidence of them will help ensure early detection if and when they occur in Connecticut and this gives us the best chance of minimizing tree damage and loss. "Deep Travel" with author David Leff

Thursday, November 4

6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. • Simsbury Public Library Program Room

Are you a deep traveler? Do you seek connections among the diverse phenomena you encounter daily? Join author David Leff for a journey that goes deep rather than far.

We'll begin our adventure with Henry David Thoreau on his epic trip along the Concord and Merrimack Rivers. But we'll also explore how our own ordinary journeys can probe the confluence of natural and cultural environments, how we can see the world in four dimensions, in time as well as space. Deep travel is about mindful looking, about journeys that go below the surface of the ordinary to find wonders hidden in plain sight. The restless eyes of ancient shepherds connected the dots in a night sky of chaotic stars and formed them into images and stories that captured the imagination and infused their world with meaning. The deep traveler does the same with the landscape around him. Deep travel is a methodology that will enrich a trip anywhere. To learn more visit www.davidkleff.com. Refreshments will be served. RSVP to 860-651-8773.

Connecticut's Landscape: Past, Present and Future

Summary:
Connecticut stands today as one of the most densely populated states as well as one of the most heavily forested. This contrast is reflected in the state’s wildlife. Bear, bobcat, beaver, moose, and otter are all on the rebound in spite of recent rapid development. But conflicts, some already apparent, and some harder to see, are beginning to emerge. David Skelly will describe how Connecticut reached its present condition after centuries of intensive farming and what the future holds for its landscapes and ecosystems.

Bio:
David Skelly grew up exploring the forests and swamps of Connecticut leading to an early interest in biology. After undergraduate studies at Middlebury College and a Ph.D. in ecology from the University of Michigan, he carried out research in New South Wales, Australia and the Pacific Northwest before moving back to his home state to take a faculty position at the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies at Yale University. Currently, he serves the School as Professor of Ecology and Associate Dean for Research. He is also a Curator at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History. Prof. Skelly has received a Guggenheim Fellowship for his research on amphibian conservation as well as awards for his teaching. Much of his current research is focused on understanding how people and wildlife affect each other in the landscapes they share.

7:00 p.m. • Simsbury Farm Apple Barn

Inspired by Connecticut Towns such as Plainville, Cheshire, and Granby using organic gardening practices on town properties, the Farmington River Watershed Association (FRWA) has launched a pesticide-free lawn initiative. FRWA's efforts are two-fold; to educate homeowners and businesses about the dangers of synthetic pesticide and herbicide uses and to maintain a growing list of home and business owner properties that refuse to use these dangerous and lethal chemicals.

If you are interested in learning about the dangers of synthetic lawn chemicals and how to make your lawn "green" naturally, please come to our March presentation by Aimee Petras of the FRWA.  If you are unable to attend, learn more by visiting the FRWA website (www.frwa.org).  Click on "Pesticides" for lot of good information.  This event is co-sponsored by the Town of Simsbury’s Gifford’s Green Conversations and SLT. RSVP’s are requested.

James Property and the Town of Simsbury Gersten Property

(including a segment of the New England National Scenic Trail)

Sunday, March 28

1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. • Meet in Tariffville at the end of Church Street Extension

This walk is about 2.6 miles long and should take about two hours. It begins in Tariffville at the end of Church Street Extension. Participants may park there, being careful not to block neighbors' driveways. (As always, we encourage car pooling). Most of the walk is fairly level, but it includes some steep hills and a lot of rocky, uneven footing. It is suitable for persons who are fit, including kids. The walk will climb the hill from Church Street Extension and merge with the National Scenic "Metacomet" Trail. It will visit the site of Bartlett Tower and from there follow a loop that will offer a pleasant sylvan walk punctuated by attractive views.

Built in 1889 as a pavilion and bowling alley, Bartlett’s Tower originally attracted picnicking day trippers from Hartford. Traveling by train to the Tariffville station, and then by carriage to the70-foot tower, visitors enjoyed varied recreation and a famous panoramic view. Today, a chimney sits at the top of the slope — all that remains of the tower, which burned down on May 24, 1936. RSVP’s are requested to 860-651-8773.

Jelle Zeilinga de Boer – Stories in Stone

Saturday, January 9, 2010

2:00 p.m. • Simsbury Library Program Room

Jelle Zeilinga de Boer, geoscientist and professor emeritus at Wesleyan University will present a program based on his new book, Stories in Stone, at the Simsbury Public Library on Saturday, January 9 at 2:00PM. In his book, Professor de Boer describes how early settlers discovered and exploited Connecticut’s natural resources. Their successes as well as failures form the very basis of the state’s history, and it is this connection between the state’s history and geology that he explores. For example, did you know that lead from a mine in the Middletown area provided bullets for George Washington’s army at a crucial point in the American Revolution? Or that the Statue of Liberty, that quintessential symbol of America, rests on Connecticut’s Stony Creek granite? Join Simsbury Land Trust in the program room of the public library to learn more about the marvel of Connecticut’s geologic diversity and its impact on our history. Snow date: Sunday, January 10, 2:00PM, same location. Refreshments will be served. Call 860-651-8773 to register.
